Chapter Eight

The following Tuesday afternoon, Amy uploaded pictures for her weekly blog post. Nash was dropping Ruby off soon. Their first girl-time without him. Ruby’s fever hadn’t broken until Sunday, so they’d had to skip their usual Thursday and Saturday dates. It had given Amy time to finish the rust, cream and navy quilt. She’d also reviewed the fabric licensing contract, talked to a lawyer, signed the papers and sent them off. Her parents had celebrated with her by grilling steaks. The evening had been lovely, but she was willing to admit, at least to herself, it would have been even better if Nash and Ruby had been there, too.

She hadn’t allowed herself to dwell on Nash’s confession. He’d done what he’d felt he needed to do all those years ago, and she’d been honest when she’d said they clearly weren’t meant for each other. If the past decade had taught her anything, it was that she deserved someone who loved her enough to stick around and share his life with her. At least Lexi had been right—Nash’s honesty had given her some closure.

A knock came from the door. She hurried to it, opening her arms wide as Ruby walked inside.

“I’m so glad you’re here. I have something really fun planned for us today.”

Ruby ran into Amy’s arms. What a welcome! Amy savored her embrace. Nash hung back, adjusting the collar of his T-shirt with Eight Seconds scrawled across the chest. He wore basketball shorts and running shoes. Gone was his cowboy hat, and in its place, a baseball cap. Since he’d returned, she’d yet to see him in anything but cowboy boots and jeans. Unfortunately, he looked amazing no matter what he wore.

“Come in.” She waved him in, determined to treat him like any other friend in town. Tension wasn’t good for Ruby. Or for her. “Want to see my fabric designs?”

He gave her a sheepish smile and took off his hat. The man was too handsome. She led him to the wire where she’d clipped printouts of her designs. The pattern was off on one, and she needed to fix the color layers of another. She made a mental note to fix them later and flourished her hand. “Ta-da.”

“They’re paper.” He sounded surprised. “I didn’t realize they weren’t actual fabric.”

Her friends had said the same thing, so it didn’t bother her. “I sketch the early ideas, then I take pictures and edit them in digital imaging software. That’s where I add the colors and make each drawing the best it can be.”

Was her best good enough, though? What if Mr. Whitaker didn’t like the final designs?

She’d heard of other designers signing licenses and not having their fabrics printed. She was this close to having her dream come true—it would be devastating for the deal to fall through.

He peered at the one inspired by Indian paintbrush. She loved the pattern. The background was tan like the dry earth, while the red flowers and green stems repeated. The collection revolved around the colors of the Bighorn Basin.
